Famous Among the Homeless

Brenda Bell is a celebrity in Frederick. She may not be well-known among the rich and elite, but she is so famous among those experiencing homelessness that they regularly approach her for help. Fortunately, you have made it possible for the Mission to hire her to minister to “the least of these.”

When homeless people approach Brenda, they are always respectful: “Miss Brenda, I heard you could help me.” They often refer their friends to her. Brenda’s warm enthusiasm is contagious. “First, I befriend them. Then I find out what they need and refer them to the program that could best help. I only help people who want help, and only in the ways they want help. Some people have addiction problems and don’t want to leave the street. I’m still their friend.”

Brenda’s history with the Mission goes back decades, and now you are making it possible for Brenda to focus more on homeless ministry. She says she is wiser now than when she first started working with the homeless. “I no longer hand out cash. I keep water bottles, small shampoos, and snacks in my car to share.”

Marie Claire met Brenda six years ago after immigrating from the Congo. She was hungry and had no place to stay. Brenda helped her with her immediate needs, then helped her navigate the immigration system. Marie Claire is now employed, and her 5-year-old son is in school. “Brenda saved my life, and I will never forget her.”

Brenda is a bright light in the darkness, and your generous heart keeps her working at Frederick Rescue Mission.
