Hood Women’s Soccer Team to Serve Again at Souper Sunday

Last year was the first time we held Souper Sunday at the spectacular Union Mills Public House on Carroll Creek. It was also the first time the Hood College Women’s Soccer Team volunteered to serve tables, and they did a fantastic job! Their enthusiasm and attentiveness made the event even better. They enjoyed themselves so much that they signed up to serve at this year’s Souper Sunday the day after last year’s event! We asked Molly Kovarik, the Hood College Women’s Head Soccer Coach, a few questions about their involvement:

How would you describe your team’s Souper Sunday experience last year?

It was our team’s first year supporting the Frederick Rescue Mission with Souper Sunday last year. I don’t think the players quite knew what to expect- we had helped the Frederick Rescue Mission in the past with their food distribution center, clothing distribution center, and with serving meals, but this event was new. Since many of the players had experience as servers and hostesses, it was a quick transition, and with a little hard work, good soup, and a few laughs, I think they really enjoyed helping such a great cause and getting to see the work FRM does from all angles.

Why did your team decide to sign up again?

It’s a well-run event, it’s a great cause, and again, great soup! Who could blame us?!

I also think they enjoyed the camaraderie of the team and all the volunteers in working together to put on a great event.

What did you like best about last year’s Souper Sunday?

I think my favorite part of the event was watching our players step up as leaders and take ownership of their tasks for the day with energy and professionalism, no matter how small the task. I also enjoyed seeing the players come out of their shells when interacting with guests and the other volunteers. Our team is a very special group of young women, and to be able to introduce them to and share these women with the community makes me very proud of who they are as individuals and how they come together for the same common goal.
