Stories of Faith: Cheryl’s Journey

Cheryl was working a part time job and living in a local shelter, when Outreach Coordinator Teri Kwiatek suggested that she apply to the Faith House 90-Day Shelter Program. She moved into Faith House in November of 2019 and began working hard to change her life. “I love the Faith House program,” says Cheryl. “It’s the perfect combination of spiritual and practical work.”

A strong woman of faith – even during years of experiencing homelessness – her relationship with God deepened while she was in the program. She also developed the ability to relate meaningfully to others. “Faith House is a great place to learn how to build a rapport with other women,” she says. “You can be honest and vulnerable, knowing that the staff is there for you and that they really care about you.”

“There are rules. Lots of rules,” Cheryl says with a broad smile and a hearty chuckle. “But they are in place for the good and peace of the women. Not only do the rules help maintain order, but they also assist the women in developing a daily schedule.”

One of the practical benefits she appreciated so much is that as a Faith House resident she received a bus pass. “This was so important because it meant I could go to meetings and job interviews.” Cheryl got a job that she loves right here in Frederick, and she also returned to Faith House recently as a part time staff member. “I want to help other women move toward independence just like I was helped,” she says.

“Faith House helped me up. I am so thankful for my time there and for what I learned. It changed my life,” Cheryl says. And that is the driving force behind every rule, every devotional time, and every program at Faith House: changing lives now and for eternity.
