Addiction defines the lives of millions of Americans and affects the lives of millions more. To better understand the realities of drug and alcohol abuse recovery, The Frederick News-Post shadowed one client at the Frederick Rescue Mission on his recovery journey.
7 a.m.: Morning chapel
As the sun stretches down West South Street, burning off the blue haze of dawn, the men of the Frederick Rescue Mission begin to take seats in their makeshift chapel. The eyes of a few of the men still hold the bleary look of sleep. Some of the men carry backpacks. Others, jackets. Each has a Bible.
Cool carries a seat cushion. His silver necklace hangs down from between an orange Ralph Lauren button-down shirt as he leans forward and opens his Bible. He thumbs to John 16. There, embedded in the chapter of Jesus talking about his death, a line reads, “Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”
