“I wish God was a girl so I can talk to Him about girl stuff”

I wish God was a girl so I can talk to Him about girl stuff.” My ten-year-old daughter went on to explain that she didn’t feel that she could relate to a “boy God” when praying for personal cares and concerns. This got me thinking about how I could explain to her that while God is our Father and the Son of Man, His perspective and understanding can and do encompass my daughter’s femininity.

In my research, I came across a terrific blog post* that talks about the mother-heart of God, sharing attributes that connect to a mother’s nurturing.

  1. He cares for our hurts. He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. (Ps. 147:3 NLT)
  2. He is our comforter. All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. (2 Cor. 1:3 NLT)
  3. He is full of compassionate care. He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young. ( 40:11 NLT)

We see the mother-heart of God in practice every day at Faith House as He enables our team to love well and minister effectively. Faith House’s director Terri Gray shares her own story and how it has shaped her hopes for the women God has entrusted to her care. Watch the short video on our website www.therescuemission.org/programs/faith-house/.

I pray that each of you, male or female, receive the fullness of who God is to us – in expressions of both fatherhood and motherhood.
