Frederick Rescue Mission launches programs to give gifts to families in need

The Frederick Rescue Mission is seeking donated toys and other Christmas gifts to give to families in need, according to a statement issued Tuesday.

The Rescue Mission has two programs through which residents and businesses, respectively, can contribute.

The Adopt a Family program lets residents “adopt” families in need — both participants in its residential programs and those in the community — by purchasing items on their Christmas list, such as clothes and toys. More than 100 families have signed up for adoption this year, including clients of the newly opened Faith House for women and children, the release stated.

Businesses can participate by serving as donation sites for the Mission’s Christmas toy drive. The mission each year collects new, unwrapped toys which are then given out to families in need through its food distribution center.

To sign up to adopt a family or to serve as a collection site for toys, contact Mike Greenberg, the mission’s fundraising and events specialist, at 301-695-6633 ext. 222 or mgreenberg@therescuemission.org.

Those who adopt a family will be emailed a list of the family’s requested items, although they are not required to buy all the items, Greenberg wrote in an email Tuesday. For sponsors of the toy drive, a collection box and flier will be dropped off at their business and collected on Dec. 11.
