Surviving the Abuse is a four-part series by The Frederick News-Post on domestic violence and the local resources available to survivors. The series will run every Sunday through the month of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
In the following weeks, the series will explore how domestic violence affects lives through hospitals, shelters and community resources. This part covers the legal system. Research shows that women often endure at least six instances of abuse before calling police.
In the United States, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experience severe abuse by an intimate partner, according to National Domestic Violence Hotline. Abuse affects more than 12 million people a year in the U.S.
